There is no single best ratio; it determines the oval’s silhouette rather than its quality. A ratio of 1.30–1.40 appears fuller and rounder, while 1.40–1.50 gives a more classic, elongated oval. GIA notes that both ranges can be attractive, so choose the outline you prefer and then assess the diamond’s symmetry and light performance.

The bow-tie effect is an area of contrast across the centre of an oval diamond. Some contrast is normal and can add dimension, but a broad, dark bow tie that stays prominent as the diamond moves can interrupt its brilliance. Because certificates do not grade bow ties, compare videos of the actual diamond or ask for a visual review.

Oval diamonds often appear larger than round diamonds of the same carat weight because their elongated outline can create more visible face-up spread. Carat measures weight, not surface area, so compare the millimetre dimensions on each grading report as well as the carat weight when judging how large a diamond will look.

The best colour grade depends on the look and budget you prefer. D–F grades provide the most colourless appearance, while G–H can offer a near-colourless look at a lower price. Because elongated shapes may show warmth near their tips, review the actual diamond against your chosen metal. Carateu Preferred ovals are selected in D colour.

For many buyers, an eye-clean VS2 or higher oval provides a strong balance of appearance and value, although inclusion type and position matter as much as the grade. VVS grades offer greater rarity and microscopic cleanliness. Carateu Preferred ovals are VVS1, while the full inventory lets you compare certified clarity grades according to your priorities.

Oval diamonds are fancy shapes, so their grading report may not provide the same overall cut grade used for round brilliants. GIA, for example, reports polish and symmetry but does not assign an overall cut grade to ovals. That makes proportion, outline, light return and video review especially important when comparing two otherwise similar certificates.

A reputable grading report identifies the diamond as laboratory-grown and records its carat weight, colour, clarity and other characteristics. Every diamond shown on this page is lab-grown and independently certified.

After purchase, the diamond is sent to Carateu in Stockholm, where our gemologist checks that it matches its grading report and reviews its condition and appearance before dispatch. Preferred ovals are also pre-vetted against Carateu’s proportion criteria. You receive the diamond with its certificate, EU VAT included and insured delivery.
