What is a ring setting?
The setting is the metal band that is placed around the finger, including the metal holding the diamond. Settings can have many different designs and be made out of different metals. It is and important part of the design of the full ring, and dictates how how secure the diamond, how easy it is to clean and how much maintenance is required over time.
What are common ring settings for an engagement rings?
The most common ring setting is the solitaire ring, which is a simple ring setting with one centerstone mounted on top. Other common engagement ring settings are halo rings, where the centerstone is surrounded by smaller diamonds, called melee diamonds, which often make the centerstone appear bigger. A third common is a pavé setting which also has a centerstone and smaller melee diamonds set on the side of the band of the ring.

Is platinum harder than gold?
Yes, platinum is harder than gold. Therefore it is more resistant to daily wear and tear than gold equivalents.
What are the differences between 9K, 14K and 18K gold?
The amount of gold is the difference between 9k, 14k and 18k gold.
- 18K gold: 75% of the weight is gold
- 14K gold: 58.3% of the weight is gold
- 9K gold: 37.5% of the weight is gold
The remaining proportion is other alloy metals. The exact alloy metals depends on whether you want yellow gold, white gold or rose gold, and the mix of the alloy metals depends on the jeweler.
Practically, the choice of the gold content have a few practical and aesthic considerations:
1. Durability
Since pure gold is soft, the lower the gold content is the more durable the ring becomes. In other words, 9K gold is harder than 14K, which in turn is harder than 18K.
2. Color
Since the amount of gold relative to other metals differs, the color of the metal changes a bit depending on which one you choose. For yellow gold a higher gold content, e.g. 18K has a richer, deeper yellow color, whereas the 9K is paler and more muted yellow. For rose gold, the 18K has a softer, light pink. Whereas the 9K rose gold has a redder and stronger copper tone. White gold is often rhodium plated so the tones doesn’t show directly, however as the plating wears off the 18K will have a stronger subtle yellow tone whereas the 9K white gold with have a lighter.
3. Price
The higher the gold content, the greater the price is. The reason is that gold is significantly more expensive than the alloy metals. An 18K ring will be more expensive than an equivalent 9K ring.
What are the differences between white gold, yellow gold and rose gold?
The primary difference is the aesthetics and appearance. They use different alloy metals to enhance, alter, or mute the natural color of the gold.
- Yellow gold often has alloy metals like silver, copper and zinc, in a composition to preserve and enhance the natural yellow of the gold.
- White gold uses white metals to mute the yellow color of the gold nickel, palladium, silver, zinc to mute or reduce the yellow color of the gold. In addition white gold is often rhodium plated to create a white shiny lustre on the ring.
- Rose gold often uses the same metals as yellow gold but more copper and less white metals to enhance the red color and create the rose appearance.
What is the difference between platinum or white gold?
Appearance
Platinum and white gold both have a similar appearance in having a white, silvery finish. Subtle differences can be seen in that platinum has a softer natural gray-silver look whereas white gold has a brighter, clearer look from being plated with rhodium. However, as the plating wears down the white gold often gets a slightly yellow tone from the gold that is under the plating.
Durability
Platinum is harder and thus more durable than white gold when it comes to being scratch resistant. Furthermore, since white gold is rhodium plated, the white gold needs to be replated every few years to bring out the shine that it originally had. While platinum’s shine also can fade over time due natural patina, it retains the overall white silvery tones and will usually just need a simple polish to get its original lustre.
Price
Historically platinum has been more expensive than white gold. Platinum is more difficult to work with than gold and more platinum is needed to produce the same ring. However, since gold has become relatively more expensive over the last few years the price gap has decreased a bit.
How do I pick a diamond for an engagement ring?
The most common way to start with a shape that suits your or your partner’s style. Diamonds come in many different forms, such as the round brilliant diamond, to the rectangular emerald shaped diamonds, to oval diamonds. Each type have their own distinct look and style. Depending on which one you choose, there might be different things to look out for when choosing the actual stone. For instance, oval diamonds may have undesirable bow-ties and emerald-cut diamonds may have windowing.
After you have picked a shape you will likely be studying the 4 C’s (cut, color, clarity, and carat weight) of different diamonds
- Cut shows how well the diamond is proportioned, its symmetry and polish (this may not be graded for all diamond shapes).
- Color how white the diamond appears ranging from D (colorless) to Z (light yellow or brown).
- Clarity shows whether there are any internal features (inclusions) or external features (blemishes). Ranging from Flawless (FL) to Included (I).
- Carat represents the weight of the diamond. 1 ct is 0.2g.
Once this is done you look for diamonds that are within your preferences and budget and study their videos and pictures to find the diamond that suits your design.

Does the choice of metal change affect how I choose a diamond?
It can impact how you should think about the diamond. For white metals like white gold and platinum, a colorless diamond in the range of D-E-F) is often more desirable to create a clean white look throughout the whole ring. Yellow gold or rose gold are less sensitive to the color of the diamond, and sometimes a little color can even be desirable to get a warmer overall look when light reflects the metal color through the stone. This allows you to optimize your budget for other considerations without compromising much on the look.
Do you offer customized or bespoke rings?
Yes, Carateu offers customizations or bespoke rings outside what is offered in our ring builder. Contact us via info@carateu.com or fill in our bespoke form for a review of the design you have envisioned.
Does Carateu offer complimentary resizing?
Yes, Carateu offers a complimentary resizing within 30 days of the order.
In some cases resizing may not be possible, e.g. if the ring has a design that does not allow for a resizing for instance for certain pave rings or if a resizing of more than 2 sizes needed.

How long does it take before my ring is ready to be delivered?
Normally, it will take 3-6 weeks before the ring is ready to be shipped to you. If you have any deadlines for the delivery, let us know before placing your order and we will investigate whether it is possible to meet your deadline.
Does Carateu offer returns on rings?
We do offer 15-day returns on some rings. Please note that returns are not possible on bespoke, customized, or otherwise altered rings. You can read more about the conditions of in our Return Policy.
